Review: BombTech Grenade 3-wood

Cavities Work in Woods Too
For years club manufactures have been making cavity pockets in irons, but the new start-up company, Bombtech, is putting them in their woods too.  The idea behind cavities is to manipulate CG and create forgiveness.  It works in just about every club if done right. Bombtech, with the help of the University of Vermont, used aerodynamics, CG manipulation and design details to create the Grenade line of woods.   While most often the talk about woods is “how long”, I think just as important is “how accurate.”  The BombTech Grenade 3-wood offers both qualities and then some.

Tyler Sullivan or “Sully” started BombTech with the desire to make higher quality clubs, with tighter tolerances and excellent performance.  The plasma welds on the 2-piece head allows them to keep tolerances tight and make a high-quality head with a unique design.  The cavities are really the story of these woods, by cutting out part of the sole plate they were able to create a dead-center CG, improve airflow along the sole and most significantly offer more forgiveness.

The arrival of the BombTech Grenade 3-wood was just in time to make my Hawaii golf trip, as well as the Bombtech Grenade wedge set. I hadn’t played golf in a while because of the snow in MN, so I was excited to see green grass, but nervous about a rusty swing.  After some time on the range warming up with other clubs I pulled out this club and bombed it dead straight down the range past the 200 flag, but short of the 250 one.  Exactly what I’m looking for in a 3-wood. I then proceeded to hit 5 more perfect shots, before I decided to save some good ones for the course.  Once I had a need for it on the 6th, 7th and 9th holes I found I repeated what was happening on the range.  I striped one off the tee for a layup on hole 6.  Reached the green in two on the par 5 7th and almost reached the green in two on the par 5 9th.

While those shots were all impressive, what really sold me on this club were the next 3 rounds that continued the forgiveness with good distance.  I can’t say I was hitting it driver length, but I am really happy not hitting it that far, because then I don’t gap the distances well.  What I love is the forgiveness, I hit so many straight shots and so many had good results even with poor swings.

The BombTech Grenade 3-wood has plenty of power, amazing forgiveness and details that make this my new gamer.  The matte black crown is really nice to look at when addressing the ball.  The compact shape is just about the perfect size for confidence, but not too big that it can’t get through some thicker stuff.  The proprietary Matrix Shaft is a “made for” version, but has a similar feel to their Code series and doesn’t play like a “watered down” shaft, but a smooth high quality shaft.

Sometimes cavities make irons feel slightly hollow, but in the Grenade 3-wood they make it feel solid.  I think that the mass down the center and true center CG creates the excellent feel in the head, along with a muted sound that is a perfect blend of crack and metallic.

Once I got back home, I hit it on my FlightScope X2 Launch Monitor and found things matched up pretty well with what I saw on the course.  I thought that during my rounds it was lower spinning than the LM showed, since I didn’t have ballooning issues but actually had good roll-out during my rounds.  But the reality is that the numbers across the board make this one really solid, accurate 3-wood.

Small companies don’t mean small products.  BombTech is doing things right with their line of high-quality, great-results clubs.  The 3-wood is a real winner in my bag. They offer a money back guarantee so you really don’t have a reason not to try it, and I think you’re going to like the results. For me, it was the perfect combination of length and accuracy.  BombTech made cavities work really well in woods too.
