REVIEW: Wilson Staff C300 Forged Gun Metal Irons

Looks, Feel, Distance and Forgiveness
Golfers make a list of qualities that they are looking for in the irons that they play in their bag. Some of those boxes might be weighted differently depending on the golfer. If you are a high handicapper, you might weight “forgiveness” about all else. If your swing speed is slower, you might weight “distance” above all else. If you are already accurate with your irons, you might weight “feel” more highly. If you simply want to look good while playing, you might actually weight “looks” very high. It probably should be whichever irons help me score best; those are the irons I should play. But to be honest, even with a good fitting, that can still be hard to figure out. At least with the Wilson Staff C300 Forged Gun Metal Irons you can check off every box: Looks, Feel, Distance and Forgiveness.
Looks
If looks had an impact on performance these would be some of the best performing irons you could buy.  The Gun Metal finish on the Wilson Staff C300 Forged irons looks beautiful.  This black finish is different from most irons.  Most black irons have gone with a matte finish, but these have a glossy black finish.  They are “murdered out” so to speak with minimal color or paintfill  on the head.  I really like how the finish hides the power holes compared to the regular metal C300s.  I was also really impressed by the durability of this finish.  The number of rounds on these irons isn’t showing at all, even playing on the hard AZ summer turf.  These are the best non-blade looking irons on the market.

Feel
The Wilson Staff C300 Forged Gun Metal irons have amazing feel.  The forged cavity back design paired with the power holes create a hot feel, but yet a buttery soft sensation at impact.  When the face of the iron and ball collide, these is this excellent sensation of compression and release so that you know you hit the ball, but no harshness whatsoever.  Again as a non-blade these have excellent fell.  The KBS Tour 105 S shafts have a nice soft feel which adds to the excellent sensation while swinging these irons.

Distance
The Wilson Staff C300 Forged Gun Metal irons are long, but in a slightly different way.  For me, they were progressively long.  I found this to actually be a really nice feature that probably suits many golfers.  Instead of just being a club or two longer across the board, they were longer in the long irons and closer to normal in the short irons.  What that means is I didn’t need 4 different wedges to fill gaps, but I also picked up some yardage at the other end.  I traditionally of have 10 yard gapping starting at GW and moving up to 4-iron.  These were more like 10, then 12, then 15 yard gaps.  For the most part this didn’t take much for adjustment, it just meant I wasn’t coming up short with my long irons. The KBS Tour 105 shaft help generate good clubhead speed too with the lighter weight.  I don’t want crazy long, it just messes with my gapping, I prefer this kind of distance which kept me from coming up short on most shots.

Forgiveness
This is probably the biggest gain of having the Wilson Staff C300 Forged Gun Metal irons in the bag.  The 3-8 irons have power holes, which are polymer filled shots on the sole and toe of the clubs.  They create a giant flex zone for unparalleled forgiveness.  Basically if you find the face, the ball is going to come off with consistent speed and go straight.  I couldn’t believe how straight the ball flew shot after shot.  The ball also flies high and lands softly for excellent distance control.  I also found the sole grinds to be very forgiving.  The soles have lots of soft edges, camber and cut into and out of the turf very easily.  There is just the right amount of offset to help square these up at impact.
